Engineering professionals rely on proven, fundamental knowledge of pavements to make the nation's infrastructure as safe and cost-effective as possible. The strength and durability of the over 4.1 million miles of roads across the United States depends on the expertise of professionals in charge of the care of those roads.

This online master's program will provide a broad understanding of pavement technology that can help working professionals better understand the entire life cycle of pavements: pavement materials, design, production, construction, preservation, maintenance and rehabilitation. Graduates can apply current practical research and modern methods to tell the difference between materials used in pavements, recognize the design of pavement systems, illustrate how pavements are produced and constructed, describe pavement performance, and identify different treatments to maintain and rehabilitate roads.

The coursework in this online program strengthens and modernizes the skills of working professionals who evaluate materials, design roads, produce materials, construct roads, and maintain existing roads. These could be unbound (gravel), flexible (asphalt) or rigid (concrete).

This Master's Program Will Prepare Students to:

  • Accelerate careers in the field of unbound, flexible, and rigid pavements
  • Demonstrate advanced technical knowledge related to pavement
  • Provide foundational resources for the entire life cycle of pavement

Successful Graduates Should Be Able to:

  • Identify key material properties within unbound, flexible, and rigid pavement
  • Demonstrate the steps to flexible and rigid pavement mix designs
  • Differentiate multiple structural design strategies of unbound, flexible, and rigid pavement
  • Identify the steps in production and construction of flexible and rigid pavement, and the production and construction of flexible and rigid maintenance and rehabilitation treatments
  • Compare how flexible and rigid pavements are preserved, maintained and rehabilitated
  • Locate and evaluate pertinent published literature relevant to a given pavement topic, and apply the information to your area of expertise.

Credit for Prior Learning

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) allows eligible students to receive college credit for prior learning achieved outside the traditional college classroom. Learners who completed all four non-credit workforce training courses in Asphalt Emulsion through the College of Engineering may seek “credit for prior learning” toward the requirements of this master's degree program, based on the university's policy. Students must be enrolled in the M.S. in Pavement Technology degree program to apply for credit for prior learning and may apply to receive 3 hours of college credit. Contact your academic advisor for details.
