Studying in an Online Degree Program: Here’s What You Need to Know

July 11, 2024 | by Heidi Wells, Global Campus |   min read

Are you considering enrolling in an online degree program? It’s both exciting and challenging because you don’t know what you don’t know, am I right?

The University of Arkansas has analyzed questions asked by hundreds of prospective and current students, and we distilled the top topics that pique students’ curiosity. Then, we placed information about those topics on a user-friendly webpage to help you. And, if you still want more details, the Global Campus staff includes extra-friendly and knowledgeable online student liaisons whose job it is to help prospective students. They can be reached by email, phone and chat.

The U of A offers more than 90 online degree, licensure and certificate programs. And, for fully online programs, you pay in-state tuition regardless of where you live. Online degrees are offered on the bachelor’s, master’s, specialist and doctoral levels, and 1,074 degrees and certificates were awarded in academic year 2023.

Information On Our Students Page

Our Students page starts with something that may make your heart beat like a drum in the marching band when you understand what it is: Senior Walk. Yes, every graduate of the U of A has their name engraved on a sidewalk. Not only the ones who attended an on-campus program – every graduate. And, the names will remain there. Years from now you can bring your grandchildren to see your name. You can make an etching to take with you or have a picnic nearby when you visit.

Next, we give you a quick video so you can see people from all over Arkansas who studied online. There might be someone from your hometown.

Then, we move to the nitty gritty:

  • What you use Blackboard Learn for
  • Where to get your textbooks
  • How a proctored exam works (what does proctored mean?)
  • Where to get help with a tech issue
  • And more

View short video about all the info we have for you.

But What’s It Like, Really?

This handy-dandy page also gives you insight from students, some with similar circumstances as you and some not because they come from diverse backgrounds. But, they will give the lowdown on such universal topics as balancing priorities, feeling connected, and combining caregiving with studying.

In videos linked to the page, students and graduates of programs ranging from nursing to physical education to human development and family studies to supply chain management talk on camera about their experiences.

You can also hear from our Manning Scholarship winners. They talk about how they manage their time and use U of A resources such as the Writing Center and libraries. We link to the Student Experience page so you can read more of these stories, including about the program that interests you.

Wrap It Up

As you get to the bottom of this page packed with information to help you be successful, you can also access our blog, The Online Learner. It has stories about all kinds of programs the U of A offers online, all designed to help you decide what you want to do. You can also read about subjects such as awards U of A faculty have received, national rankings of programs, use of artificial intelligence in the classroom and what sort of jobs our graduates get.

Finally, there’s an FAQ section that covers how you will turn in your assignments, how advising and registration works, what kind of computer equipment you will need, and more.

And, just a reminder, if by some chance you don’t find what you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to contact one of our online student liaisons. They will get you an answer.
